Siemens Set to Acquire Industrial Drive Business

April 10, 2024
With the planned acquisition of ebm-papst, Siemens see growth in intelligent, battery-powered drive technologies.

Nearly a year ago, Siemens sold its low-voltage motor business to ABB, which included Siemens’ line of severe-duty and general-purpose motors. Despite this divestment, Siemens continues to focus on its motion control business.

As evidence of this, Siemens has signed an agreement to acquire the industrial drive technology (IDT) business of ebm-papst, which includes battery-powered drive solutions for intralogistics and mobile robots. ebm-papst is a supplier of fans and compact and intelligent mechatronic systems. The company employs around 650 people.

The IDT products of ebm-papst are intelligent, integrated mechatronic systems, which support the automation and digitalization of production processes. According to Siemens, this acquisition will complement the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio through IDT products use in mobile robots and driverless transport vehicles as well as in the automation of auxiliary processes, such as the retooling of production machines.

The transaction is to be completed by mid-2025. The IDT business of ebm-papst is located in St. Georgen and Lauf an der Pegnitz, Germany, and in Oradea, Romania. The companies have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.
