Ethernet-APL can offer enhanced performance and simplified infrastructure when applied.

The recent advancements in Ethernet-APL technology, particularly in the context of Single-Pair Ethernet (SPE) Education Day, have introduced several promising products that are of significant interest to automation engineers.

Control, Automation World’s partner publication, reported that key highlights included the launch of Phoenix Contact's APL-Field Switch, a 24-port switch capable of Power Class A and beyond, designed for use in hazardous environments. This switch demonstrated seamless connectivity with devices such as Samson valve actuators, Supcon pressure transmitters and Endress+Hauser temperature transmitters.

Similarly, Pepperl+Fuchs presented their FieldConnex Ethernet-APL DIN-rail field switch with up to 24 spur ports, suitable for installation in Zone 2/Div 2 areas, and capable of Profinet communication. Relcom showcased innovative Ethernet-APL adapter/media converters and the MTL831C-APL temperature multiplexer, which streamlines the integration of temperature sensors into control systems using Modbus TCP protocol.

These developments underline the transformative potential of Ethernet-APL by offering enhanced performance and simplified infrastructure. Ethernet-APL enables longer reach (up to 1,200 meters), higher speeds, greater power delivery and straightforward point-to-point installation in intrinsically safe areas without the need for complex gateways or power supplies.

This is particularly beneficial in migrating from traditional communication protocols like Profibus PA and HART to Ethernet-APL, as highlighted by Phoenix Contact's product manager, Jehad Hameda.
